Solo exhibition

1913 Hultberg's Konsthandel

Hultberg's Konsthandel, Stockholm, January 20–February 5, 1913.

Widforss' first solo exhibition. They sold about half of the paintings. The exhibition included a number of works from Menton, Monaco, Cap Martin, and Capri. Anders Zorn purchased a painting.

From clipping from an unknown Stockholm newspaper found in the artist's scrapbook.
"At Hultberg’s art supply store now exhibiting till the middle of next month is a Swedish watercolorist Gunnar Widforss. He is still quite a young man who began his studies in color art and decorative painting here at home. For the most part, he has lived abroad, in Italy and Switzerland, and there he has worked exclusively in landscape in watercolor. One or another watercolor from his hand has previously found its way home to our art dealer, but now is exhibiting as a collection. And this does him quite an honor. Watercolor painting doesn’t have at the present time so many practitioners that we can’t be thankful for a strong foundation that is meaningful.

The subjects are all from abroad, the most from Italy and the Riviera. The south’s sunshine and brilliant color infuse them, all carefully observed and rendered, and if the technique can still be further refined, they have still a delightful elegance, which is one of watercolor’s more distinguishing features, and nothing suggests for the moment a concern that their elegance becomes trite, because however illusory these landscape images are, they belong not at all to the more bland, conventional sort..".
